Director Chen Xi elected academician of International Eurasian Academy of Science

At the 22nd Academician Conference of the China Science Center of International Eurasian Academy of Science (CSC IEAS) held in Beijing on Nov. 16th, 2019, Chen Xi, Director of Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA), was elected academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Science.

Professor Chen Xi, Vice President of Xinjiang Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of RCEECA, specializes in ecosystem and physical geography of arid area, and remote sensing and geographic information system. So far, he has conducted systematic researches in many dry areas around Tarim River basin, Ili River valley, Irtysh River bank and Aral Sea. He has published over 200 papers included in SCI and 16 books. His efforts in science have been recognized by 3 National Science and Technology Progress Award Second Prizes, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Award, 1 Xinjiang Science and Technology Progress Award Grand Prize, and 7 Ministerial Science and Technology Progress First Prizes. In addition, Chen Xi holds posts in several international or national institutions: President of the Geographic Environment Information Division of International Society for Environmental Information Sciences (ISEIS); President of the Union of Central Asia Resources and Environment Studies; Foreign Academician of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic and Kazakhstan Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

IEAS, based in Russia, was established in 1994. With 600 fellows, corresponding members and honorary councilors from 46 countries, IEAS has set up 3 regional branches — Europe Center (in Paris), Eurasia Center (in Russia), and Asia-Pacific Center (in China), and offices in 15 countries. The CSC IEAS was founded in 1996 with the approval by the State Scientific and Technological Commission. With 206 academicians, CSC IEAS is ranked second among all 15 offices.

This year witnessed 24 new Chinese scientists being elected academician of International Eurasian Academy of Science, the highest number ever in China.
