China-Tajikistan Natural Disaster Joint Investigation Went on Smoothly

Between August 22nd and 25th, Tajikistan Natural Disaster Investigation Team, consisting of 9 people from the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA) and Chengdu’s Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, led by Liu Wenjiang, Deputy Managing Director of RCEECA and Chen Xiaoqing, Deputy Director of Chengdu’s Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment visited Tajikistan. 

After meeting Laxmi, President of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences, the team introduced the basic information about Chengdu’s Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment and ANSO disaster mitigation alliances and discussed bilateral future cooperation in disaster research and prevention. After visiting RCEECA Dushanbe Branch, they conducted academic exchanges concerning Tajikistan’s disaster issues. Experts from Tajikistan Academy of Sciences Institute of Geology, Institute of Water, Botany Institute and Animals Institute and those from Emergency Situations and Civil Defense Committee and Hydrographical and Meteorological Bureau introduced their research work respectively and discussed on the issues they showed interests in. 

On August 24th, with the coordination and support of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences and Emergency Situations and Civil Defense Committee, China-Tajikistan Joint Expedition Team took helicopter to Sarez lake of Pamir Plateau to conduct field investigation about the stability of the dam body of landslide-dammed lakes and landslide risks of the lake area and exchanged views on the rationality and plausibility in conducting joint dynamic monitoring of dammed lakes and preventive construction measures.

During the visit, the team visited China Road & Bridge Corporation’s office in Tajikistan, listened to the introduction about China-Tajikistan road construction and disasters along the way and investigated the disaster conditions at some sections of China-Tajikistan roads. Besides, they also visited Ghizar Earthquake Monitoring Station of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences Institute of Geology.

This investigation will provide solid foundation for the implementation of environment impact and disaster risks research in key areas and key projects in the pan third pole pilot projects as well as the monitoring, research and prevention of disasters along the Belt and Road.
