State media focuses on cooperation of ecology and environmental technology in Central Asia

To coordinate the convening of the 19th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Bishkek and the 5th Summit on Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Dushanbe, and actively promote the cooperation and exchange results of various levels and fields between China and Central Asia countries under the above framework and the Belt and Road Initiative, Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily both dispatched teams to visit Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA) Bishkek Branch and Dushanbe Branch for interview and investigation on June 11th and 13th , 2019.

In Bishkek, Chen Xi, Vice President of Xinjiang Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of RCEECA, and Professor of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, introduced the basic information of RCEECA and Bishkek Branch, current research projects and results achieved at current stage with the display boards, and led the group to visit the analysis & testing lab of the branch. Later, he had a panel discussion surrounding relevant topics of China-Kyrgyzstan scientific and technological cooperation with President Dzhumataev of Kyrgyzstan Academy of Sciences and staff of the branch. In the end, the interview team went to the “Demonstration Site on the Safety Guarantee Technology and Application of Drinking Water in Rural Areas” in the suburb of Bishkek and conducted interviews there.

In Dushanbe, besides visiting the analysis & testing lab of the branch, the interview team also conducted exclusive interviews on Director Chen Xi of RCEECA and President Rahimi of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences as well as those in charge of the China-Tajikistan scientific and technological cooperation projects currently under way for any updates on the progress.

Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA) was established in May, 2013 under the framework of CAS’s Developing Countries Science & Education Cooperation Programme with the collaborations between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Kazakhstan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Kyrgyzstan Academy of Sciences, Tajikistan Academy of Sciences and Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences. Faced major research demands on resources, eco-environment of Central Asia and the construction of green Silk Road from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it aims to promote the mutual benefit, collaboration and talents training in ecosystem, water resources, geology, climate change, environmental pollution, sustainable development and agricultural technology. At present, RCEECA have held the Urumqi Headquarter, Almaty Branch, Bishkek Branch and Dushanbe Branch, 3 joint labs, 3 information sub-centers, 15 field observation & research stations and 4 experimental & demonstrative sites for agriculture and ecological technology in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Over the past 5 years, RCEECA has achieved fruitful outcomes in platform building, academic exchanges, talents training and scientific cooperation, which significantly promotes the high-level and high-quality exchanges and cooperation among Central Asia countries in ecological environment and remarkably improves the scientific and technological influence of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Central Asia region.
