China’ Gaofen-1 Satellite and Gaofen-2 Satellite Image Atlas for Rwanda is released successfully

On November 9th, China’ Gaofen-1 Satellite and Gaofen-2 Satellite Image Atlas for Rwanda , jointly compiled by Sino-Africa Joint Research Center, CAS (SAJOREC), Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Joint Research Center on Natural Resources and Environment in East Africa, Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA) and University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK), Rwanda, was released successfully, and the release ceremony was held in the form of online video.

Zhang Yaping, Deputy President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xing Yuchun, Deputy Head of Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, Virgil Rwanyatar (transliterated), Deputy Counsellor of Rwandan Embassy in China, and Wang Zhenyu, Deputy Director of Bureau of International Cooperation CAS attended the ceremony, and and it was presided over by Chen Xi, Party Branch Secretary of Xinjiang Branch of CAS and Director of RCEECA.

In the release ceremony speech, Zhang Yaping congratulated on the release of the atlas and expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the compilation of the atlas. He said it was of great significance that the release of the atlas coincided with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Rwanda, and the release was also an important achievement of the 10-year cooperation in science and education. He hoped that the atlas could provide important technical support for the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of Rwanda.

At the ceremony, Zhang Yuanming, Director of XIEG, Ngamije Jean, President of UNILAK, and Wang Qingfeng, Director of SAJOREC, respectively briefed on the major progress and phased achievements of bilateral cooperation in science and education; the representatives of the embassies attending the ceremony also spoke highly of the compilation and release of the atlas and agreed that the cooperation and exchanges between China and Rwanda in the field of science and technology would be of great significance to promoting the harmonious coexistence between human beings and the earth and the sustainable social and economic development of the two countries.

RCEECA and XIEG Geographic Information System Research Team, with Chinese high-resolution satellite image data, spent half a year compiling and drawing 100 pages of high-resolution remote sensing satellite images of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, and other nine regions and showed the natural geographical features of Rwanda.

The signing ceremony of The Science and Education Cooperation Agreement from 2022 to 2026 entered into between XIEG, SAJOREC and UNILAK was also held at the release ceremony.

The researchers from relevant departments of Bureau of International Cooperation CAS, XIEG and RCEECA attended the release ceremony.

Gaofen-1 Satellite and Gaofen-2 Satellite, as the important components of China High-resolution Earth Observation System, with the resolution of 8m and 0.8m respectively, can provide high-precision and wide-range space observation services for the land and resources sector, agriculture sector and environmental protection sector, and play an important role in such fields as geographical mapping, marine and climate meteorological observation, water conservancy and forestry resource monitoring, refined urban and transportation management, epidemic assessment and public health emergency response, and earth system scientific research.
