On March 19, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held an initiation meeting of Belt and Road major consultation project on innovation and development in Beijing. Bai Chunli, the project initiator, an academician of the CAS and the chairman of Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO), attended the meeting, and the meeting was chaired by academician Gao Hongjun, the vice president of the CAS.

At the initiation meeting, Cao Jinghua, the executive director of the ANSO Secretariat, introduced the project establishment, organization and work plan on behalf of the work group. The academicians and experts attending the meeting respectively reported the research program under their theme group, and proposed the research ideas, research contents, staff composition and expected target. Moreover, they also performed deep communication with the comrades from related ministries/committees, and raised specific advices on the subsequent work

The academician Bai Chunli conducted summary on the basis of theme reports and meeting discussions, and commented the theme one by one to address that, while serving the major decisions made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the project consultation should promote more innovative achievements to serve the countries along the Belt and Road. He further addressed that, both the issue-orientation and demand-orientation as well as the communication and connection of each theme should be enhanced, and the field survey in the form of case analysis should be properly performed so as to ensure the steady progress in consultation project.

The Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee, the National Development and Reform Commission of PRC, the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC, the National Health Commission of PRC, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, the CAS Division Bureau, the ANSO Secretariat, the theme alliances and the think-tank network member institutions all dispatched their heads to attend this meeting together with the theme members and relevant experts.

As a participant of Belt and Road major consultation project on innovation and development, CAS Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (hereinafter referred to as the Center), will give full play to the advantages of existing scientific research platform and cooperation network in Central Asia, and will actively participate in the consultation and research to ensure the smooth implementation of the project. Professor Wu Miao, the deputy director of the Literature Center of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, attended the project initiation meeting on behalf of the Center.
