On July 15th, the 10th “Tianshan Mountain Academic Forum” , which was sponsored by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA), while organized by the Geographical Society of China Sub-Society on Arid Land and Xinjiang Institute of Natural Resources, was held at Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography. This forum was hosted by Director of RCEECA Chen Xi and was attended by over 100 researchers and graduate students.

Academician of CAS, Professor of Wuhan University and Dean of Water Security Research Institute Xia Jun, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Dean of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Fan Jianping, Deputy Dean of the Academy of Social Sciences of Hong Kong Baptist University Zhou Qiming and Professor of Wuhan University Sui Haigang were invited to this forum. They also gave reports titled “Thinking and Suggestion on Water safety and Ecological Protection of Yangtze River Region”, “Innovative Practice on Integrated Design and Development of Science and Industry”, “Geographical Information and Smart Society Building” and “Coordinated Emergency Monitoring Technology of Aviation, Aerospace and Ground Remote Sensing and Its Application”. Given the presence of various ecological problems along the Yangtze River, Academician Xia Jun analyzed main factors that restricts ecological development and high-quality development and offered suggestions.

The reports of 4 experts had theoretical elaboration, experimental analysis and cases introduction. Such leading-edge but also practical reports combined the principles of ecological protection, innovative practice, building of smart society and the practical demand of establishing and demonstrating a precise emergency service system. Attendees had exchanged and discussed on relevant issues.

Academician of CAS Xia Jun was among the first batch of experts to be selected to China Science Think Tank, a member of Review Committee and an expert on hydrology and water. He was mainly engaged in research on hydrology and water and received systematic research results on time-varying nonlinear theory and practice for runoff formation and transformation. His research results were applied in flood control and disaster relief in the monsoon region in Easter China, which includes Yellow River, Yangtze River, Huaihe River, and small and medium-sized rivers in Northwestern China as well as cities. Such results were also used in water quality and quantity control and water management for major water conservancy projects built to cope with climate change. All of these brought significant social and economic benefits.

Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences Fan Jianping is an expert in cloud computing, and high-performance parallel and distributed computing. He is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Computer Research and Development and part-time professor of Nankai University. With his profound research foundation in high-performance computer and application, he was seen as one of the founding members of Dawning series high-performance computers.

Professor Zhou Qiming, Director of the Research Center of Geo-computation and Analysis and Professor of the Department of Geography at Hong Kong Baptist University, founded geo-computation research center in 2009, which focuses on geographical information system technology, remote sensing and its application.

Professor Sui Haigang is second-degree professor of Wuhan University, doctoral supervisor, Luojia Distinguished Professor, recipient of the “Outstanding Young Talent” Award of China, Optics Valley “3551” Talent (a plan to attract talents to Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone), head of “Science and Management Strategic Team” of Hubei Province and a recipient of Wang Zhizhuo Young Scientist Award. He has been long engaged in integration of remote sensing, GIS, and sensor information, theoretical research of spatial-temporal big data for smart cities, technological breakthrough and project application.
