On March 4th, the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (hereinafter referred to as RCEECA), Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography CAS (hereinafter referred to as Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography), and the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan held an online signing and launching ceremony for the establishment of the China-Tajikistan Joint Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Biological Resources. Those who attended the ceremony included Chenxi, secretary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Xinjiang Branch and also the director of RCEECA, Zhang Yuanming, director of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, and Saidov Abdusattor, deputy head of Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.

At the ceremony, the RCEECA and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography signed an agreement with the Institute of Plant, Physiology and Plant Genetics and the Institute of Animals and Parasites, Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, and the Pamir Institute of Biology on establishing the China-Tajikistan Joint Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Biological Resources.  

Director Chen Xi said in his speech that the Dushanbe center of RCEECA was established in 2014 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, which has played an important role in promoting scientific and technological cooperation, platform construction and talent training in the fields of ecological environment between the two countries. The establishment of this joint laboratory marks that the two sides will focus more on the research of biodiversity and biological resources on the basis of the original cooperation. The RCEECA will also make full use of the advantages of the existing platform to fully support and ensure the smooth operation of the joint laboratory.

Director Zhang Yuanming, deputy head Saidov Abdussattor, Ms. Zeng Xianfa of the Chinese Embassy in Tajikistan, deputy director Ning Bolun of the European Office of Bureau of International Cooperation CAS and Director Song Chunhong of the International Cooperation Office of Science and Technology Department in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region delivered speeches respectively, congratulating and fully supporting the establishment of the joint laboratory. They also expressed the wish to continue practical cooperation on the new platform, deepen bilateral research in biodiversity conservation and other related fields, and promote the protection and sustainable utilization of regional germplasm resources.

The China-Tajikistan Joint Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Biological Resources, with China and Tajikistan as the core and other Central Asian countries as the participants, aims to build an international platform dedicated to regional biodiversity conservation, technology research and development and talent training. This platform is expected to realize resource sharing and advantages complementing, and promote the common development of ecological civilization construction and bioindustry in Xinjiang and Central Asia.
