Professor Xue Desheng from Sun Yat-sen University Came to the RCEECA for Academic Exchange

On August 14, at the invitation of the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (hereinafter referred to as RCEECA), Professor Xue Desheng (Dean of the School of Geographical Sciences and Planning of Sun Yat-Sen University & Vice Chairman of the Geographical Society of China) visited the RCEECA and gave an academic report entitled Urban Networks in the Era of Globalization and the Status of Chinese Cities in the World", sharing his thoughts on world city theory and Chinese city globalization. The meeting was presided over by Chen Xi (Director of RCEECA).

Professor Xue Desheng introduced the development of world cities in the context of globalization and informatization from the aspects of the classical theories of world cities, the political driving force of world city development, and the global city system, demonstrating his study on global cities in view of China's development stage and reality. Moreover, he proposed that the driving force of globalization on urban development was diversified, and he introduced the political driving force of globalization, the structural characteristics of political world cities, and the development of world cities under the influence of social and cultural driving force via classic city cases. The participants conducted an in-depth exchange on the functions of cities in the era of globalization and the driving force factors of world cities on surrounding regions, enabling both researchers and students to understand the frontier fields, latest research trends and research methods of urban geography in the era of globalization.

After the academic report, Liu Wenjiang (Executive Deputy Director of RCEECA) systematically introduced the operation management and scientific research progress of RCEECA since its establishment, and the two sides exchanged and discussed the scientific and technological cooperation in Central Asia.

Professor Xue has been engaged in the study on urban geography and urban & rural planning for many years. He has presided over 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 1 key international cooperation project & 10 international cooperation projects, and more than 30 projects entrusted by local governments. Meanwhile, he has published 7 monographs and more than 200 academic papers in Chinese or English. In addition, he won the second prize of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Excellent Urban Planning and Design Award, and the first prize of the 2nd Wu Chuanjun Humanities and Economic Geography Excellent Paper Award. He is also the editorial board member of 6 academic journals such as Acta Geographica Sinica, and Chinese Geographical Science.
